US steelmaker Nucor has maintained its weekly spot price (WSP) for hot rolled coil (HRC) at $935 per short tonne for most production facilities, with California Steel Industries (CSI) seeing a price of $995/tonne. This decision comes after a nine-week period of price increases, as reported by GMK Center. Since the start of 2025, Nucor has increased its hot-rolled steel prices by $175 per tonne.

Despite a slowdown in the HRC market, Nucor announced a $40 per short tonne price increase for plate products in late March, applicable to May contracts. This adjustment aligns with a rise in customer demand, as noted by the Charlotte, North Carolina-based company. Since January, Nucor has implemented four price hikes for plate products, totaling an increase of $320 per short ton in 2025.

The company's pricing strategy follows a similar move by SSAB Americas, another major US plate producer, which raised prices by $60 per short ton last week. SSAB has increased its prices by $300 per short ton since the beginning of the year. According to data from IndexBox, the average price for plate is now $1.19 thousand per short ton, with stability observed over the past three weeks.

Global hot-rolled coil prices experienced weak demand in mid-March, with US prices remaining steady from March 14 to 28 at $975 per tonne EXW. Since the start of the month, the product has seen a $125 per tonne price increase. The implementation of a 25% safeguard duty on imports of all steel products to the US, effective from March 4, has allowed local producers to raise prices without external competition, although the growth potential appears to have reached its limit.
